The road this month took us to Miami International Airport to connect to a flight to Costa Rica. We had booked to stay at Rui Guanacaste for 4 nights. I’m am going to be right upfront here, I took my big camera, but truthfully, I only used it a couple of times and the rest is phone images. I just wish the phones would come out with Camera Raw, so that I can post edit them.
Of course, Ella’s Mr. Sloth joined us on vacation. He lives at Grandma’s house but is one of Ella’s favorite toys.

Leaving Miami, I resonated on the number of vehicles I could see on the road, like a little Lego city. Constantly on the move. There are so many people living in this city. Traveling over the ocean and crossing Cuba and back out again the coastline and water patterns were just so impressive. The last flight image is flying over Costa Rica with all their beautiful little bays. We flew into Liberia and were through customs quickly with no issues.

Traveling through to Rui Guanacaste was via a 7 seater taxi. One thing I will say is that the roads are not great and the taxi’s shocks are probably worn. The trip was bumpy. The roads are somewhat narrow in places and over bridges it appeared that it was a single lane. There were times when we were on the road that I was a little nervous. Not only for myself but for the guy riding the bicycle that we were overtaking. Yet we got there safely thanks to our driver. Overall the trip was about 1 hour from the airport to the hotel.

The hotel was huge but was not too busy until Friday. Then the crowds came. From what we understood from my daughter’s work colleague, was that Tuesday was Independence Day and that people had most likely taken a long weekend. Amy’s colleague and his family had driven 7 hours from the capital to come and spend the weekend with us. We were all blown away that they would travel that far. That said check in was done, suitcases were in the room, kiddies were hungry and a Pina Colado was calling my name. There was 7 different restaurants on site. The main dining area, the American bar, the Italian, the Mexican, the Asian, and the Steakhouse. I never found the 7th one to be honest. The only complaint I had was we could not get into either the Asian or the Steakhouse, and the were closed on the busiest days. All the other restaurants were a buffet style, which I am not a big fan of. The food was average. That said this had to have been the best hotel bed I had slept in. The room was decent and my only complaint there was the shower gradient was such that the shower always had some water in it. It never fully drained. But otherwise the place was more than enough.

As I mentioned, the hotel is huge. It involved a lot of walking from one place to the other. First stop was a swim at the beach. The beach sand was black. We also quickly realized that the current was pretty strong and getting out was not as easy as getting in. The pools was scattered around the hotel, some close to where we were and other close to the splash pads. The splash pads were a walk to get to from the main area, but Luka headed there most days. There was some little shops on site that I visited and ended up doing some shopping. There were different bar stops, and outdoor entertainment. There was a neon party the one night, and Luka hung out with mom and dad, and Ella had a sleepover with Gran and Granda. Saturday night had evening entertainment but we did not attend because we were tired from the sunset cruise.

We encountered some natural wildlife in and around the hotel. This little guy was begging for scraps of food. While everything in me says that this is a racoon, it did look a little different. Its stripes are not as prominent and it’s tail is not long. Looking close up at this one it looks like it has an eye issue going one as well. That said all it did was beg and was not pushy.

The other natural wildlife that we encountered was the white faced monkey known as Capuchin. They were on the beach pathway the one day and we were able to get up close to them. The mom and baby were very cute but mom did show her teeth at one stage when one of us got to close.

This monkey was just happy go get some banana.

We spent a lot of time at the pools, when Luka wasn’t at the splashpad. The first two days it really wasn’t busy and we had the pools to ourselves. Luka is into Moana right now and so his boat went with us to Costa Rica. He spent a lot of time playing with the boat and the shape of the chairs made for great waves.

We did a trip to an eco park. I wanted to do the wildlife tour. It was pretty much a mini zoo and that was the only time I used my camera to take photo’s. But after the self walking tour we found a great playground for Luka to hang out in until our ride came back to pick us up. Apparently you could do zip lines, and 2 wheelers there but it is hard to do those thing when you have 2 kiddies.

Nap time was typically Luka’s splash pool time and so I got to take Ella for her sleep time. That wasn’t awful because it meant I got air conditioning for a while :). Sometimes that took a little while, but eventually she got good sleep and woke up in a happy mood most of the days despite probably having a cold.

One of the highlights of the trip was a sunset cruise. We drove an hour by taxi to Coco Bay and then were shuttled via a small boat to the catamaran. The trip was about 2.5 hours , and I was blown away to see my first whale in the water ever. Of course, with all of these sunset cruises drinks and food are included, and they were enjoyed. On the cruise was a Peruvian group of couples and single women, and I truly admired there sense of joy. They danced and sang and just had fun. I told Amy that we were really boring people. Even Luka got into the dancing, although I think he was trying to do Danny Go to the music that was playing. It was good to share that time with others. Before you know it you are heading back to land, being shuttled via the small boat back to the sand, and then it was the taxi ride in the dark back home. That was a little hair raising and twice I thought the guy on the bicycle was going to get bumped but he stayed upright. Thankfully the taxi was able to take us right back to the hotel check in area and not just the gate because I had visions of trying to get Luka to walk from the main gate to the room.

For a good part of the cruise I had Ella asleep on my chest and missed the beginnings of the sunset but eventually she woke up and I was able to use Amy’s phone to take a bunch of sunset pics. Mine had died by then. Below are some of my favorites.

Of course all good things come to an end, and the end of the trip meant packing up and getting to the airport only to find out that the plane has been delayed by an hour. Airport time, meant eating and shopping and walking around the tiny Liberia airport. The flight home was quick. Ella slept on me a good 3/4 of the way home. This time I sat by Amy and Daniel sat with Richard. After a while Daniel came and took Luka back to sit with them. That gave us a seat for Ella when she woke up. Flying late afternoon and 2 hours ahead meant we got to see the sunset on the skyline and the city lights as we flew into Miami airport

The idea of {Mood} takes me straight to black and white images. I love moody black and whites. So for this blog I decided to look at sunsets. As I was editing I came across a few that had people in them. There is something about watching a sunset that is really peaceful for me. Its another complete day that I have done what I needed to do; my job, my home time, and today my baby duty time. Catching the setting sun, especially on a cloudy day create super moody black and white images. It’s time to relax, to meditate, to contemplate. Sometimes it’s time to catch up with friends who have also come out to watch the sunset. My preference is always to watch the sunset rather than the sunrise. I am not a morning person. I take a while to get my act together. But I love the end of the day. And I love to end my day with the opportunity to watch the sun set yet again.
I read a quote yesterday on the eclipse moon but the same would apply to the sunset
It offers a primal sense of what it means to be human, through shared despair and delight under a celestial rebirth. We are all so consumed by our problems on the ground. Sometimes, we need a reason to look up ~ Katrina

The day is over, the night has come.
Today is over, what’s done is done.
Embrace your dreams throughout the night.
Tomorrow comes with a whole new light.
I hope that sunsets resonate with you. I hope the dark and stormy edits create the {mood} I was going for. At the end of the day, I am grateful for my husband, my children, my grandchildren, and the faith that I have in creator that gives me the most amazing sunsets.

Happy New Year to you all. May 2026 be all that you are hoping for and may the blessings be rich. The first theme of the year is {Weather} and for most of the team they hopefully have weather images that have managed to capture. For me down south there really is not a lot of change in the weather. Those two token cold days appear and disappear very quickly. Which I hate because I could really do with some cold these days. And by the end of summer I am a winter wanna be.
The end of the year has been a rush for me with our trip to New Orleans for 2 weeks, then back to work for 2 weeks then off again for a week, then back to work for 3 weeks and off again for 2 weeks. I have felt a little off and having to do catch up while wanting to spend time with the kiddies as well.
That said we did have a small change in the weather for hot to cool to cold back to hot again, the cold culminating on New Years Eve.

We started out on Monday with a warm winters day, enough that we decided to do one more trip through Lion Country Safari before our pass expired. Of course part of that is the splash pools and Luka is game for the slides any opportunity he can get. It was a little frustrating as they want you to be 42 inches. He is but according to the lifeguards he has to be at the top of the measure and not at the bottom. At Legoland he was allowed to go on all the slides. Here he could only use the small kiddie slide. One of the things I am not crazy about at these water parks is the huge bucket of water at the top. It has a great effect, but I worry that that amount of water landing on the neck of a young child is dangerous. That said it does have warning beeps but if the child doesn’t know what that means then it is a potential problem. Luka has narrowly missed having this load of water on top of him.

Tuesday came around and was a pretty pleasant morning, but by the time my cousin and his family arrived the weather was starting to cool down. I had not seen my cousin for close on 18 years and at that time it was at my mothers funeral so it was kind of a hi, thank you and move on to the next person. We opted to do lunch rather than dinner and then I took them for a short walk in the wetlands, before heading on to the South African shop for the family to buy some SA goodies. My drive back home was cold and the sky was pretty impressive.

New Years Eve morning was cold, chilly, and any other word you could think for it. My friends up north, I am sure were freezing. I know my friend in Dallas was. Amy had invited us to dinner and they planned to do a bonfire. Richard said it was too cold to go, but I decided I was going. While it was cold, the wind had died down somewhat and the fire generated enough warmth to actually have to move your chair back.

It was cold enough that we bundled Luka up into a sweatshirt and sweatpants with shoes and socks. We tried to put a jacket on over that but he was not having it. While dad was barbecuing, Luka was prepping his food to barbecue.

Daniel built a fantastic firepit and we got to enjoy a really warm evening as a result. He had numerous layers of wood on top of each other and I said it resembled a funeral pyre it was so well done. And it burned well and certainly kept us warm during the cold evening. Added to that I had given them a smores pack for Christmas and so they were tested out. Only thing I forgot to put in was skewers and so they had to improvise.

Added to that they had bought a small pack of fireworks to let off once it got dark so that Luka could enjoy them. He loved it but had his hands over his ears they whole time. Ella on the other hand was not to happy with the noise and so most of them were let off after she went to bed.

As the evening wound down, so did the fire to some beautiful hot coals.

Out of all of us Ella was the most dressed up in her sweatsuit and double socks and grandma’s hat. We also had to put some socks on her hands at one stage just before she went to bed. I did not stay until midnight. I did not want to be driving on the road when everyone was heading home, so I left around 10pm and just saw midnight in at home.

Friday was still somewhat chilly although the weather was starting to warm up. This began the weekend of the grandmothers watching the children while the parents took a quick 3 day vacation. Luka was with me, while Ella got to stay with her Baba. Friday night’s sunset was spectacular and we worth feeling the chill to get this image.

Saturday was warming up and Luka and I headed to the park for some energy release time. He loves to play at the park and this one was in his community. I went up during the day to help with Ella. She is more work than Luka is.

Today it feels like we are back to summer. While the kids are away the grandparents get to play. This morning I took Ljubica, Luka and Ella to breakfast. This is really her last full weekend here and after being here for 6 months this coming weekend she will be heading back home. I think it will be a hard adjustment all round. She has been living with them for 6 months and Luka in particular will miss not having her there every day.
Today he was a little out of sorts, and so while Ella was sleeping, I took him to the local park about 10 minutes away. He clearly goes there fairly often because he is familiar with all the different slides and climbing options. I am like a helicopter grandmother but I am nervous that he might fall.

That has been the weather for us. I wish I had snowflakes and that kind of scenery but to be truthful if I did have that I would probably be inside the house with a bottle of Frangelica and a good fire lol.
Thank you for joining us on this photography loop. This is a circle blog and as I mentioned, we have some very talented artists in the group. Take some time to follow the links and see what they have for you this month. My talented friend Lupji of Lupji Photography is up next. I look forward to seeing what he has to share.
I look forward to blogging this year with the team again. They bring such diversity to the different topics that I hope that we are all able to contribute throughout the year.
Until next time..

I chose the theme this month with the criteria that the level of {Out of Focus} could vary. That said I have chosen some images that are my favorites from the archives and some that are more recent. I will say I kind of went overboard a little, but I hope you enjoy.
When I looked at the theme, I broke it down into a number of categories, elements, nature, lenses, and my favorite style of shooting images, that isn’t travel.
With the elements I found two images that reminded me of what days in Florida can be like, hot, humid with the occasional fog,

Nature, particularly sunsets, when using the Lensbaby lens, can create unique out of focus images. Here are a few taken at one of my favorite sunset spots.

Using lenses to create different styles of out of focus is a fun way to experiment. In the days before I had a macro lens, I discovered the reverse ring method. It’s hard I am not going to lie. Its kind of like free lensing with a reverse lens. At the time I could not afford a macro lens, and this was my best option. It was definitely fun, until the day I could not get the reverse lens off my camera and I panicked. I did get it off but that made me more determined to get a macro lens.

At one stage I got into all the different types of Lensbaby optics. I have a huge variety of them, but I constantly forget to use them. My favorite is the sweet 35, but I also have the double glass, plastic, sweet 50, twist, pinhole, single focus, and soft focus. I will confess that the soft focus messes with my eyes. When you are used to sharp images the Lensbaby optics will cause you to do a double take. Below are a few of the images I have taken with the different optics.

The images below were taken with the Lensbaby sweet 35. This is probably my favorite of the Lensbaby optics and if I am going to pack one, this typically finds its way in. My problem is that for the most part I am using my zoom lens and I definitely forget to pull the Sweet 35 out.

Macro lens are super fun. The focus in on the main area and leave the rest out of focus. We have these plants in the garden that are really great with water drops and dependent on the light can give a nice hazy effect.

My favorite style of photography by far, is done with the 70-300mm lens, and my 150-600mm lens. This requires me to get down level with the critter or leaf that I want to shoot and just getting that tiny sliver of focus while the rest are out of focus. This I broke down into two areas, critters and still life.
Critters are a lot harder as they move, but here are a few examples of the out of focus with the attempts at in focus. What I love about these photo’s is the creamy out of focus feel with just an element that is in focus.

Leaves are still life and don’t jump on me and using the same concept of getting low and level with the object, and having people look at me as if I am weird, and wondering what the heck I am taking photographs of, I continue to take my photo’s of leaves or something that catches my attention. Of course, there are ants on the board walk and Florida loves fire ants. I got bitten once and those critters are nasty.
Again I love the sliver of focus with the balance of the image being a creamy out of focus. Dependent on the leaves, you can get some really interesting colors. One of my favorites was a boardwalk that had moss on it, and it gave off this blurry greenish creamy color.

Another images that captured my attention that were not leaves, was this feather that clearly someone had picked up and stuck in the groove sometime before I walked along. It just looked really neat sticking up and so I snapped a shot.

Last but not least I came across two other images that were experimental that can create a beautiful out of focus effect.

Out of focus is fun and I am expecting to see some stunning images from my fellow blog contributors. Some of them specialize in the Lensbaby and ICM effects and I can’t wait to see them. Which reminds me, this is a circle blog and as I mentioned, we have some very talented artists in the group. Take some time to follow the links and see what they have for you this month. My incredibly talented friend Janet from @wiredtothemoon_ is up next. I can’t wait to see what she has to share. You can see more of his work by clicking on her and Instagram page.

I have struggled since Covid to pick up my camera. The combination of covid, Richard getting sick, a new baby on my days off, and just a lack of desire to pick up the camera has made it harder. I am seriously considering doing another 365 just so that I pick up my camera everyday.
I’ve also noticed that I have struggled to edit as well. I am sitting with unedited images from Macedonia. Unedited images from Australia, and in 4 weeks we are heading to Phoenix for 10 days. I have been doing some research and the images I have seen from Antelope Canyon and Sedona blow me away and so I know I am going to come home with a million images to edit. I need to stop doing other things and settle down and get these pictures done.
Until we share again, stay well

I am not sure where time went but this group is starting their 9th year as a blog group. We have had people come and go but I have loved every minute of being with this group and learning from them. They challenge me and force me to step out of my comfort zone. This month is no exception. Claire chose the theme {Painterly} and I have to be honest that I was forced to go to Youtube to figure somethings out.
My frustration was the brush tool. It kept brushing white on a new layer. I have not figured out the answer as to why it is doing that but if anyone has suggestions I am so open to hearing them. There were some great techniques but I was stumped with that tool.

The next effect I aimed for was a watercolor effect using different filters.

The next attempt I made with to create layers of texture. I followed a Youtube example and quite like the rough textured effect.

I am not quite sure how I got the next effect but I kind of like the embossed feel to it. I used texture images, with and emboss filter and changed the layers from normal to a different setting.

For the next image I wanted to do portrait painting and make it look like a water color. I followed the tutorial step by step. I am not 100% sure that I like it. Added to that I have a limited amount of brushes and I really need to find some more.

This image already had a textured feel to it when you looked at the wall, but again I used textured overlays and embossed them and added some filters what provided a bit of grain .

This image already had a strong bokeh effect to it created with my lensbaby sweet 35. Like the first image I used attempted to get a watercolor effect to the image. Plenty of texture and paint brush swirls.

Claire definitely challenged us this time around, but it was fun to play and find different ways to do things.
I followed a number of tutorials, some worked, some didn’t. Here are a few that I followed:
https://www.psfreebies.com/convert-any-photo-to-digital-oil-painting-effect-in-photoshop/
arizo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MAoR4-Jnjsna
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obokOCj3vNs&t=644s
I also downloaded some free brushes from
https://www.brusheezy.com/brushes/59067-free-painter-photoshop-brushes-3
Lastly I used some textured images for the overlays:

Finally my last image was an attempt to get a brush stroke effect as well as the blended edges. Again the brushes were a problem but in the end I was happy to just get something.

Trying the {Painterly} effect was fun. It was a nice change of pace and I really enjoyed doing something different.

When you read this, I will be walking the streets of Sydney, Australia. A little bit of history, both my fathers parents were Australian born, but both families emigrated to South Africa where my grandmother and grandfather met, married and created their own family. I will not get to where my grandmother was born but I am hoping that I will be able to walk the streets of my grandfather’s birth town.
However, that is not why we are traveling there. In 2020 Richard developed a melanoma, and for the last 2.5 years he has been on immunotherapy. For a while we did not know which way it would go, but as of the last scan things looked good. But it reminded us that he has not seen his family for a good 10 years, and have not seen our nieces for over 23 years. Our nieces have their own families now. Most of all Richard will get to see his mom whom he has not seen for way to many years.
Ironically, his entire family emigrated to Australia, and mine left Australia.
While we are gone I thought I would share another beautiful sunset in the good old Florida, USA. I love silhouettes and on this particular night I managed to get a few.

I loved watching the sun go down, and last of all the blue hour after the sun sets.

I hope you are all having a fantastic day. Think of me, I already picture sore feet. We are going to be walking a lot. I have plotted out a map of Sydney and I cannot wait to see it. In addition, we plan to walk from Bondi Beach to Bronte, and on a different day catch a ferry to Manly. I also get to meet up with a cousin on my dad’s side of the family in Sydney and hopefully Melbourne and meet up with a childhood friend who will fly in from Brisbane. I joked that it seems crazy that we both have to go halfway around the world to meet up again. That is the scatterings of Africa. We are all over the world.
In addition to spending time with family in Melbourne, we will be doing the Great Ocean Road, as a 3 day road trip. I cannot wait to -Port Campbell and see the incredible rock formation. The challenge here will be that Richard hates cities and I love to walk through them and see all the architecture and beautiful buildings. He wants to walk to waterfalls. I’m not saying I don’t like that but I do want a balance of city and surroundings.
Until next time, stay well

It’s another week and another project. This week’s theme was Blue Hour. That is the period just before the sunrises or just after the sun sets. I had a couple of Saturday night but they did not count because they were in the wrong week. So it was back to Loxahatchee National Park on Tuesday evening to see what I could come up with.
Love watching the sun set on the day. It feels like an achievement of sorts. I have survived the day, and survived another day to put it honestly. I am always so conscious that time is limited now. I am at the age where things start to go wrong. I remember growing up and the folks would meet up with friends, and the conversation would be “do you remember so and so…, yes… , well they are dead”. Yikes. I have reached that age. So it is good to get out and celebrate each day.

Finally the blue hour arrived, and I got the image below. I had hoped for more clouds but it is what it is. I definitely got the blue.

As I was walking away down the embankment to the car, I turned around to see what was behind me and spotted this silhouette. I think this may be my blue hour image that I will submit.

Nature is a great place to get out and appreciate the beauty of this world. When the day is tough and the troubles are huge, find somewhere where you can just walk and appreciate the beauty around you. That is what I like to do.
Look out for more sunsets, more Macedonia pics, and Whoo Hoo, in a few days I am heading to Australia for 2 weeks. I know, I know 2 weeks is not enough, but it is all I could convince the other half into taking. Stay well until next time.

Color is our theme for Share Six this month and I grateful for all ability to see Color around me. The world is a beautiful place. Color comes in so many diverse areas of our lives, from sunrises and sunsets, to flora and fauna, to places we visit. There is so many opportunities to experience color in our lives.

Wherever you are in the world and whatever you celebrate, I wish you a blessed time. For me it is about Christmas, and celebrating the birth of Christ. It’s about family time. It’s about little Luka tearing into his presents. It’s about quality over quantity. It’s about sitting at the table over a meal and enjoying the celebration. This year we will get to celebrate with Daniel’s mom as well. She will be flying in to the US in 2 weeks and I am so excited for her.
Stay safe, stay well, enjoy the festivities. We look forward to seeing you in 2023.

I chose the them {Travel} this month because I knew I would only be arriving home from 12 days in Macedonia four days before we were due to go live.
Travel plans to Macedonia started way back in 2019, but circumstances kept postponing it. In December 2018, Amy & Daniel got married in our back garden, however, none of Daniel’s family could be with us. So Amy & Daniel planned to go to Macedonia and have a reception there for his family in 2020. Well we all know that covid happened and that put paid to any traveling. 2021 was the year from hell, and Richard’s health played a big role in us doing anything. In addition Amy was pregnant and was not able to travel. So 2022 comes around and the kids are determined to go back home to Daniel’s family and they wanted us to go with. This would be the time to have his family celebrate their wedding and also have Luka baptized. We would spend almost a week in his home town before heading out on a road trip to see the rest of Macedonia as best we could.
Below is a short synopsis of the traveling we did. Details will follow in additional posts.

Macedonia was a beautiful experience that we may never have done if it was not for Amy and Daniel asking us to go with. I am grateful that we got to meet Daniel’s mom, brother and sister in law, and their daughter, as well as extended family on both his mothers and father’s side, his groomsmen and friends. We also got to experience some of his culture and understand Daniel a little better. Added to that we got to see a fair bit of the countryside. Hopefully Daniels mother will be able to come out later this year and we will be able to reciprocate the hospitality. Today I get to try to make two different macedonian dishes, kebapi and borek.
Travel rounds out your understanding of the world and life as it is lived by others. It gives you a better sense of knowledge and helps you to be more tolerant of different ways of life. Travel broadens your horizons and gives gives you the opportunity to meet new people, taste new foods, and drink new drinks. Travel is something I wish I could do more often. Next on the list is a visit to family, part of my family history and a place we have always wanted to visit, Australia.

Well this month has passed and I have done one walk. I have struggled to get out on my free day as I have had Luka and for the past 6 weeks he has been sick. Last weekend when I did plan to go out, I ended up with him spending 3 days in our home. Amy had bronchitis and she did not feel at all well, Daniel was working night shift, and honestly we did not want Luka to catch something else. As it was I took him to the doctor for a check up on his cough and discovered he had another ear infection, and subsequently received another antibiotic. Poor guy spent a good bit of time in my arms.
So I looked through what I had not edited this past year and pulled images for light from there.

This image caught my attention because of the bokeh and the light shining through the wings. This poor Anhinga has clearly had a run in with something, probably an aligator, given the loss of feather. I have to wonder how it is flying to be honest.

Whenever I go to shoot the sunset, I always take my lensbaby, but for some reason I never pull it out. This was one of the light images that I had not edited 2 months ago. This is my favorite spot to get some nice pond reflections. What I like about this image is the reflection of the son on the leaves of the reeds.

Out in the garden and just after the rain. The light was dullish but I was able to capture the waterdrop at the tip of the leaf.

Out on my walk recently I spotted this Iguana in pockets of light. He was on a berm surrounded by trees and there are odd spots that get lit up along the edges. The Iguanas are in mating season and this guy clearly has been fighting as he has a bloody spot on his back that looks like a claw snagged him.

Sunsets are my favorite and sometimes they are average and sometimes they light up the sky. I loved the different shades of light in this image.

Moody kind of light found along a secluded walkway. This are my favorite kinds of images.
This is a circle blog and as I mentioned, we have some very talented ladies in the group. The sneak peaks are stunning and I cannot wait to see the rest. Take some time to follow the links and see what they have for you this month. My incredibly talented friend Janet from @wiredtothemoon next is up next. I can’t wait to see what she has to share. You can see more of her work by clicking on her Instagram pages. Definitely check out her incredible art.
