Share Six: Jul;y 6, 2025: Fences

I feel like the months are flying by. In the past I have done 3 blogs in a month and now it seems like I have just finished the one and Share Six is back around again. Tomorrow we are halfway through the year. And on that cheerful note, let me switch thoughts to our theme for the month of July. {Fences} is what was picked and so I went to Google for the definition of Fences. According to the Oxford Dictionary. it is a

a barrier, railing, or other upright structure, typically of wood or wire, enclosing an area of ground to mark a boundary, control access, or prevent escape.

For this theme, I decided to head to my travel images and look for the various fences I have taken over the years. We have traveled a fair bit in the USA. Sometimes the destinations are okay, sometimes they are amazing. Below are some of the fences we have encountered along the way.

Bok Gardens, Lake Wales, Florida

For this trip my brother had flown in from South Africa to Florida for a conference. Perfect time to see family. He loved catching up with the kids. We then did a road trip via Lake Placid (and the wonderful wall murals) and on up to Lake Wales, where it was recommended that we go to Bok Gardens. They were definitely worth a trip and since it was Christmas time, it was all decorated. The gardens are fairly large and we enjoyed walking around them.

The River Walk, San Antonio, Texas

Again, my brother was in town for a conference. This time we were off to San Antonio to meet up with him. This river walk fencing stretched along the restaurant area and we ate in this vicinity a number of times since our hotel was just across the river walk. We got to explore San Antonio, catching buses to various monastery and exploring them. We also got to explore the Alamo, which was interesting as well.

St Augustine, Florida

St Augustine was always our go to holiday vacation spot. Just getting out of Florida is 5-6 hours and so this was a good stopping point for us. Besides we loved the campgrounds at St Augustine and the beautiful beaches. This fence was found along the sand dunes. I had a habit of dragging Richard down to the beach for sunset each evening, even though the sunset was in the west and we could not see the final descent of the sun. Just being in the moment is what I love.

Denver, Colorado

Denver Colorado in March. Again my brother was at a conference and since we had never been to Denver, it was a good time to meet up again. Actually anytime is a good time to meet up. I loved Denver, even though it snowed and it was cold. It was good to get out and walk the city. Richard gave up, it was too cold for him, but I plodded along through the university area and just really enjoy the snow. That vacation led to a trip to the Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, Estes Park and the National Park as well. One I fully recommend.

Portland, Maine

Who hasn’t come across a lock fence at some point in time. I feel like I saw one on a different trip but could not find the image. Portland, Maine was our day to go whale watching. Looked like a beautiful day to be out on the water, and I really wanted to see whales. 2 miles out and the fog rolled in and fog was all I got to see that day. It was so disappointing. Maybe one day I will get luck. In the meantime I just keep on hoping.

Orca Islands, Washington State

We met up with my brother in Seattle for a fantastic time. This time my sister in law joined him on his trip and so while he was in conference we walked the city. I have to say I loved Seattle and would love to go back again. We did a day trip to Bainbridge Island. We walked to China Town. We met up with an old friend of mine for dinner and tips on exploring Seattle. That was special. Once the conference was over we drove to the ferry point to head over to the Orca Islands. I spent the entire time out on the deck of the ferry looking for whales. Zip, nothing, nada. Did I mention it was March and it was cold. But Seattle and the Island trip was one of my best holidays.

Niagara Falls, State of New York

Niagara Falls was next on the list. I never thought I would get there anytime soon, but it so happened that as part of a training session, my 2 colleague’s and I had to go to Rochester, New York. So of course, yours truly looks at the map, calculates the distances, looks at flights and advises them that we are catching the 5am flight to Rochester so that we can go to Niagara Falls. None of us had been there. I was willing to drive and so I did. It was amazing. We also took the opportunity to catch the ferry down at the bottom of the falls, and honestly I think I got moisture in my camera but it was so worth it. It made the next two days of training worthwhile.

Epcot (Disneyland), Orlando, Florida

Epcot at Flower time is always fun and again we were meeting up with my brother. The flower show is always spectacular and well worth the visit. Epcot is probably my favorite of the Disney parks to visit and this event is no exception. All of the characters are dressed up in flora and it is a fun experience if you have not done it before. The downside of Disney for me is that it is always hot and crowded with people and it’s not something that I do too often. But the chance to spend sometime with my brother again makes it worth while.

Wells Beach, Maine

Sometimes holidays are so impromptu. Maine was one of those. I was talking to my direct supervisor about where to take vacation and she offered me the use of her Cabin in Wells Beach. That was a fantastic trip. We flew into Boston and then drove via Salem and Manchester by the Sea (I needed to see it after watching the movie), up to Wells Beach. The town is beautiful and there are some gorgeous day drives around the area. I got to visit Portland as well with a friend who had moved up there. Then we did a trip up to the Bar Harbor and in particular Acadia National Park. We also did a day drive into New Hampshire to the White Mountain National Forest. Then it was back to Boston for 2 days of intense exploring before heading home. Boston is a such a cool town.

The Redwoods, (Bodega Bay area), California

For this trip my Ozzie in-laws were in town. Kevin had a conference up that way so we flew up to San Francisco to meet them, and immediately headed up to Napa Valley to do some wine tasting and explore the area. On our way back down to San Francisco we passed through the Redwoods in the Bodega Bay area. These incredible giants are a sight to behold.

Alcatraz, San Francisco, California

Another fence that reminded me that the San Francisco trip had it’s downside despite being a great day out. We caught the ferry to Alcatraz and did the tour of the facility. It’s hind of eerie going through the facility and I can only imagine what it was like for the people incarcerated within those walls. Alcatraz makes me think of the South African version of Robin Island where Nelson Mandela spent many years of his life locked up inside 4 walls. The downside of this trip was that it was raining and I somehow slipped on a metal grid and ended up tearing my ligaments in my dominant leg, which still worries me today. After Alcatraz getting around was a lot harder and painful. The interesting part of this trip that we stayed on a houseboat that was featured in a 60’s Hippie style movie.

St Georges Island, Florida Panhandle

Richard and I decided we wanted to get away and so we headed up into the panhandle for a week of camping. It was pretty isolated and not a big campsite so not a lot of neighbors. The beaches were stunning and the sunsets were gorgeous. The fun memory about this trip was that Richard had been out kayaking and I was suntanning and I suddenly saw birds diving into the water as though there was a pod of fish in the water. He came back and we went out towards where all the diving birds were. Always curious and normally very agile he wiggled his way so that he was lying over the kayak with googles on his face looking into the water. What he saw was enough to make me want to walk on water. The birds were diving for the fish, but under the water there was a bigger predator chasing down the fish as well. Two sharks bigger than our kayak. Super carefully he got back into a seated position and we made haste for land. I just had visions of being shark bait for a while.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

How interesting that something as simple as {Fences} can bring back so many good memories of trips that we have taken. Of time with family, or just by ourselves. Times where we have met up with friends, or made new friends. We have traveled a lot and sometimes it is just good to be able to stop and rest and for me this was in the Rocky Mountain National Park, where we had walked out into the snow that just seemed to get deeper and deeper. I was glad to be able to take a rest for a while.

Just a reminder: The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence, the grass is greenest where it is watered ~ Robert Fulghum

I’d love to hear what memories fences bring up for you.

30 Minutes in the Life: July 2020

And so life goes on…. Florida is spiking like crazy and I am staying at home as much as possible. The virus came closer to home with my sister in law, who lives oversees, being diagnosed Covid Positive. Then one of my husband’s employees was diagnosed Covid positive. We are now quarantining for the next 2 weeks dependent on his test this last week. It is a bit of a wake up call that it really can affect you no matter how much care you take. The good news is that I am okay with staying home 🙂

Work happens 4 days a week, and all is good. Our vacation was cancelled and that was a real bummer. Hopefully August 2021 will be a better year. Now to figure out what to do with 24 days of vacation.

Oh, I so want to travel. What better to do than to go back in the archives and see what has not been edited. Maine 2018, and we had just traveled through Bar Harbor. What to do the next day? I suggested we go to the “less busy” island adjacent to Bar Harbor. Less busy was a good description. What we had more of was mist. That said mist gave me the opportunity to go back and play with black and white images. This month I am sharing 30 minutes of a day in the mist.

Mist or fog creates this eerie kind feeling as you walk along the banks of the water. However, I did like the mist slipping around us. One day we will be able to get on the road again, and I have to be honest I look forward to it. I am sure you do to.

Please stay safe, wherever you are in the world. Thank you for joining me for 30 Minutes in the Life. I would encourage you to take some time to visit my very talented friend April of April White Photography  and see what she has for you this month.  Check out her Facebook page as well.

Share Six: March 2020: Morning

Good {Morning} to you from Bar Harbor in what feels like the wee hours.  Oh yes, once again we are back up and heading out to watch the breaking of the day.  Bar Harbor is perhaps one of the most beautiful sunrises I have experienced, and I have sat through quite a few.  Something we had learned over our days in Maine, is that the fog rolls in and out quite unexpectedly.  This morning was no exception.

When we first arrived, I actually thought that the fog was an island.  However, it kept moving closer.  The weather was chilly for such an early morning, but we took coffee along with us.  I moved around a bit on the dock to try and catch the boats heading out for their early morning fishing, and then back to try my best to capture this gorgeous boat in the sunrise.

This month Share Six’s theme is {Morning} and this is mine.

If you have not been to Bar Harbor, then it should be on your bucket list.  Not only is it a quaint town, but it is also the gateway to the Arcadia National Park.  A park well worth visiting.  Added to that you are right up near the Canadian Border as well, and a ferry ride to Nova Scotia.  We stayed in the town limits, and walked up and down the streets and down to the waterfront.  There were a lot of interesting little shops to browse through.  The highlight of the town was we had one of the best calamari we have ever had and we also got to eat lobster tails, (something we don’t often do 🙂 )

Tell me a Story: February 2020: Maine

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts: September 2018: 0248

The Coastline of Maine is beautiful, and we got to explore the area.  Heading up to Bar Harbor, Maine, Richard had a goal.  Visit Arcadia National Park.  If you know anything about me or if you have learned over the past few years, I have had 3 foot surgeries.  The words National Park, and foot surgeries do not go well together in my opinion.  I know what to expect when I hear National Park.  While my feet are okay they certainly are not pain free and after 3-4 hours of walking I need to stop and rest for a while.

One thing that I really enjoyed about Arcadia National Park was the coastline.  And yes, it did involve the word “Hiking”.  Ever since my 20’s the word “hiking” makes me want to run and hide.  I do however, get through it and typically find I have enjoyed it by the end.  Hiking in Arcadia National Park is really not the same as hiking in South Africa.  In the USA it is more drive to the next parking lot, spend 20 minutes trying to find the furthest parking from where you are actually going and then walking on a pathway/steps etc to get to where you are going.

Arcadia was not far from that although we did get to do some rough climbing over rocks etc.  The coastline is rugged and impressive and is well worth the visit. On some of these images I  stood at the top of the rocks looking down watching the water come in and go out and kept getting the feeling that I was being sucked into the flow.

If you are visiting Maine, do your best to plan a stop over in Bar Harbor and Arcadia National Park.  Visit the Mount Desert dramatic rocky coastline and also look out for Jordan’s Pond in Arcadia, or also know as Long Pond.  It is definitely a highlight in the area.  Look out for our early morning sunrise at Bar Harbor blog coming out on the 6th.

Thank you for joining me this month as we spend time sharing another day in our lives.  This is a circle blog.  Take some time to view what the other artists have for you this month. My friend Mindy of  is up next and I can’t wait to read what she has to share.

Tell Me a Story: June 2018

It’s time to blog and I am sitting without a computer so I have pulled up some photo’s from last year that I had edited but not posted.  Last year we did an impromptu trip to Maine.  I happened to be chatting to my work colleague about how I needed to use up some vacation time but really hated wasting vacation time on a staycation.  She told me she had a cottage in Maine that we were welcome to use.  Having never been to Maine we jumped at the opportunity.  We headed up late September.  The weather overall, except for our whale watching trip, was fantastic.  Not hot not too cold.  The whale watching trip was bitterly cold out on the ocean, and it was foggy.  We did not see whales, in fact we saw practically nothing.

If you read my blogs, you will know that when I travel I am a bit of a planner.  I see very little point in going somewhere blind.  Yes I know there is spontaneity in doing thing impulsively and I am game for that, but I also want to have some idea of what I want to see and have some kind of plan.  If we don’t get to see it, all fine well, if we do and it is on my list, I am super happy.  There is nothing worse for me arriving in a unknown place, as a co-pilot and trying to find where to go.  Don’t ever asking me to do Amazing Race.  GPS is my best friend.

On of the places on Richard’s list was to go up to Bar Harbor, and Arcadia National Park.

Here are a few of the images I have already edit.  When I get to the rest I will have to come back and share them.

As we meandered up the coast we pulled into little towns that appeared to have places of interest or we just thought we would mosey on through.

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts: September 2018: 0013

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse was one of those places we decided to visit.  It turned out to be an interesting stop.  As we started to walk down to the lighthouse there was a group of volunteers handing out garbage bags.  They were asking visitors to do some cleaning up along their walk.   We did not walk all the way out to the light house.  I was still healing from foot surgery and long walks were still a bit of a struggle, but I did enjoy seeing the beautiful bay and watch the dogs playing in the waves.

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts: September 2018: 0056

We stopped in another small town along the way and I loved seeing this older couple walking together along the edge of the water.  I hope someday that I will be able to do that as well.

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts: September 2018: 0121

Arcadia National Park was stunning and I do not do it justice with this images.  They were edited for a particular purpose.  Hoever, I loved seeing the fall colors for the first time in my 18 years of living in the USA.  We hiked down through the trees to get to lower areas, and up through the trees to get to higher areas.

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts: September 2018: 0161

From the top of the hill in the Arcadia National Park we looked down over Frenchman’s Bay.  On the edge of the photo is one of the very big cruise liners that we spotted in the bay.  While this spot look tranquil and maybe a bit lonely, it was honestly bustling with too many people.  I love those places were I can go out and enjoy the quiet and this was not one of those spots.

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachuttes: September 2018: 0172

I made a new friend, or rather my lunch made a new friend, lol.  I am facinated by how big those birds grow up north.  Our gulls down south seem a lot smaller.  These guys parade around like they are in charge of the show.

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts: September 2018: 0208

The parking was up the top, and we hiked down to a very beautiful rocky bay.   The walk was so pretty with it beautiful colored leaves all around you, and there was a coolness to the air that made the walk rather pleasant.

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachuttes: September 2018: 0214

This is just one of the many bay images taken. At one point I was standing at the edge of the rocks looking down to try and capture the water rushing up into the gulley area.  The ebb and flo of the water had me thinking I may just go over the edge.  Quick step back

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts: September 2018: 0268

One of the images I had seen while researching was a sunset at Jordans Pond.  Sadly we were not there at sunset, however, the area was beautful and I loved getting low down to get this image.  Just above this quiet spot, is a bustling restaurant, where you can sit outside and enjoy bar type food and beer.  We did take a bit of time to enjoy a cold one.

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts: September 2018:

Bar Harbor was a quaint and bustling little town. We walked all over and I have to be honest, food wise this was probably my favorite meal – lobster tails and calamari.  Portsmouth came second with their lobster roll.  We only stayed one night, so early the next morning we rose before sunrise and headed down to the harbor area.  Watching the sun say hello to the day was special.  If you look in the background of the pic you will see the fog that we seemed to see a lot of on this partiular trip.

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts: September 2018: 0418

We had two options on how to plan our day.  Explore more in the Arcadia National Park and then head home or explore the adjacent island and then home.  Given how touristy Arcadia was I suggested that we head to the next island and see what there was to see.  If I have to be honest, not too much.  This, however, turned out to be one of my favorite images, and one that placed relatively well in a competition I had entered it into.

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts: September 2018: 0441

Southwest Harbor was nothing really to rush out to and beyond that it was mainly housing.  So that probably was not the best decision that I had made but you make choices and you live with it.  So we were back on the road and headed to Wells Beach.

Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts: September 2018: 0536

Our last stopping point was at Orchard Beach.  When researching I found what looked like a very interesting pier.  Of course, finding parking was no fun, and my co-pilot was all ready to give up but we eventually foound a place to stop.  This was indeed an interesting pier, and while I was going for the silhouette look here when I edited, the pier is actually bright and colorful.  We walked through the pier to the very end where we took a break, rested our weary feet and cooled our throats.  Of course, we watched the locals swimming in the ocean and thinking that they were crazy, the water was freezing for these Floridians.

Hopefully by my next blog I will have a working computer, but who knows.  I pushed the button, hit send after a 3 hours self debate of was I ordering the right piece of equipment.  That said it is now ordered and along with that a 34 inch monitor, so I cannot wait to play.  I am just hoping that the tech guys will manage to transfer the data and images off my laptop, since I just realized that my San Antonio images were on there and I don’t think I have a disc with them on.  Bummer if they are all gone.

Thank you for joining me on this very quick and impromptu trip along the Maine coastline.  This is a circle blog so I would encourage you to visit my friend Mindy and see what she has for you this month.
