30 Minutes in the Life: March 2019

While the opportunity is still available, I like to try and spend time with my brother when he visits the USA.  He’s been a bit of a frequent flyer the past couple of years, but will stop soon.  We were fortunate to have him come through in December just in time for Amy’s wedding.  It was perfect to be able to have family with us on that day.

Then this past March he flew back for a big conference.  Next month he will be in San Antonio.  Not sure if I will get to spend time with him on that trip as I have been out sick for the past 2 weeks.

However, he had one day free with this March trip and it so happened that it was Amy’s husbands birthday on that day.  So as a family we all did a trip to Epcot.  We stayed up there 2 nights and got to spend the whole day walking around Epcot.  And yes I survived but my feet ached by the end of the day.  Down side is that I picked up a flu bug and it just flattened me.  I have been exhausted and tired and coughing for 2 weeks now and have just managed to pull together a few images for this blog.  We chose Epcot because it had the Flower event on in March.  And that aside I am not a big thrill rider so at least it had something of interest for me.

Here are some images from the day spent at Epcot.

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 2914

The flower show was as usual spectacular and I loved seeing all the Disney characters

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 2919

Bees are such an integral part of the life’s survival.  It is so important to continue to protect the bees in our communities.

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 2921

The gardens were colorful and beautiful.

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 2938

This display featured the junk that is found washed ashore or in our rivers.  We are dealing with a major crisis with the junk that is polluting our rivers and oceans.  We can take a stand and make a difference.

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 2971

I love sea horses and looking at these tanks reminds me of our scuba diving days in Mozambique, where the reefs are beyond beautiful and the color is so bright.

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 2982

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 3009

Of course we went looking for Dory and Nemo while we were there.

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 3011

Cars in flowers. Just got to love it.

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 3046

We moved on to visiting the countries and this one was taken in Mexico.  The place was super busy.

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 3085

A Chinese dragon with a very interesting dragon face.  China had a display of the different creatures your birth sign falls under.  I am apparently a Tiger,  sensitive, emotional and capable of great love.  On the flip side I was also labeled stubborn, hothead and rebel.  So watch out for me.

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 3181

The amphitheater had Steve Aguirre from the band Journey playing music that week and so we made a point of stopping by.

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 3175

Apparently I must have listened to Journey’s music because I knew most of the songs.

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 3217

After walking back to the hotel and taking a breather, we caught the boat back to the park to watch the fireworks.

Epcot 2019: March 8, 2019: 3284

It was a pretty impressive display and at the end we head back to the ferry boat to catch a ride back to the hotel.  Unfortunately we all packed up and left the next morning, the family back to South Florida and my brother on his long journey home to South Africa.

I am one of those people that can give and take on the theme parks.  To be honest I did Epcot 8 years ago and I can probably wait another 8 years.  That said it was good to be with my brother and have the whole family together for a change.  It was definitely a long and tiring day.

Thank you for joining us for another month of 30 Minutes. Just a reminder that this is a circle blog, so take some time to visit my friend Sonia Eppel Fotografie and see what she has for you this year.

Share Six: March 2019: Food

Ah, food.  I do enjoy eating food, but I realized I really do not like taking food images.  I lack imagination in this department.   So yes this months theme is {Food} and honestly I am stretching myself here just trying to find 6 images on the topic {Food}.

Recently my son, partnered up with a pastor and 2 other folk to start a new church in a nearby area, so I have been going down to the church on Sundays to help out with the creative side of things doing photographs.  The church wants you to feel welcome and so there is always coffee and something edible.  This particular day it was donuts.  Further down you will see some pastries.  To be honest – I was happy to photograph them but I am doing my best to stay away from these tempting delights.

Legacy Church 2019: February 3, 2019:

Banquets are a fun place to photograph food, and this green starter was amazing.  Cucumber strips to form a bowl, with greens and walnuts and roasted onion, and a tiny bit of blue cheese really tasted good.

First Care Banquet: November 6, 2018: 9427

Here are the very edible pastries that you can find at the new church.

Legacy Church 2019: March 3, 2019: 2659

Another banquet plate.  Chicken seems to be the go-to for banquets.  This particular meal was lemon chicken with capers, roasted baby potatoes and fingerling vegetables.  For chicken it was definitely pleasing to the taste buds.

First Care Banquet: November 6, 2018: 9505

This was my attempt at photographing my Strawberry Walnut Salad with a balsamic vinaigrette and honey dressing. I had planned to shoot individually and then the end result.   Clearly the strawberries were as creative as I could get.

Food: March 2, 2019: 2549

Last in line was this hamburger taken at my daughters wedding.  They opted for a beach lunch with the choices of calamari and wings as the starters, a spicy chicken flatbread, salmon on a bed of rice with asparagus, or a beef burger with fries.  Dessert was a key lime pie.  The food was great and I was glad I did not have to do anything other than pay the bill.

241_IMG_0490

So now that I have successfully managed to make myself hungry, I need to go and have some dinner.  Tonight’s menu with a vegetable pasta sauce and rice.  Hits the hungry spot 🙂

Tell me a Story: February 2019

I have not been for a walk in the wetlands for a long while, so this past week I decided to head over to the local cay for a 2 mile walk.  While it is always nice to photography the birds I do like to photograph the different styles of nature.  This day there was some beautiful bokeh, interesting lights, and cute little critters.  And I got to get my two mile walk in as well.

30 Minutes in the Life: February 2019

February has been a interesting month of hot days, cold days and those in-between rainy days.  My goal has been to go walking in the wetlands on a Friday but just lately my Fridays have been wet and not much walking has got done.

There was a little break in the weather this particular Friday and I decided to go to the local park.  There really is not much there. A very small butterfly garden.  The butterflies never sit still.  A small boardwalk that does not attract much bird life.  It’s kind of a weird walk and a little lonely so I never really go to far in.

Today I picked up the macro and headed out there quickly to see if I could capture anything.

Share Six / February 2019 / Hearts or Red

So that was January 2019 done and dusted.  This year Share Six has decided to incorporate throughout 2019, different causes that mean something to us. It’s either a cause that we had agreed to highlight or a cause that directly impacts us.  This month we have chosen to highlight #CHDAwareness and the #paperheartproject.  Two years ago I first connected with the #paperheartproject when a fellow photographer asked all the friends she knew to post and image and tag #paperheartproject.  I was amazed at the response.  This year she is doing it again.  The goal of the campaign is to spread awareness of Congenital Heart Defects is all about. One out of a hundred children are born with a CHD. There are many different types of CHDs and children can suffer from one defect or multiple defects. The severity of the defect can range from mild, meaning a child will need no treatment, to terminal, the defects will ultimately take the child’s life.

The story my friend shared was that her son had been born with 10 different CHD’s.  He has now undergone 3 open heart surgeries, 1 intestinal surgery, and 88 other procedures.  Due to the functionality of his heart he will need a heart and liver transplant in the future.  There is no cure for CHD’s only surgery and as a mother my heart goes out to this family.

Paper Heart Project: February2, 2019: 1266

As a parent, I knew the fear of hearing that my son had a heart murmur.  Fortunately for him, he grew out of it.  That is not to say that we did not experience multiple surgeries with Cameron.  He had a bone disorder, that resulted in 17 surgeries.  My nephew has had heart surgery just recently to repair a leaky valve.  But I cannot comprehend what this young boy in the story above has gone through.  Today he is 5 years old.

If you do not know much about CHD, I have posted a link below that you can go and read up about it.

For the rest of my blog I have chosen to stick with the heart theme.  The heart is the most vital source of our bodies.  It is the very organ that keeps us alive.

So I looked around, in nature and places that I have visited for images showing a heart.  Some are new, some may be older.

ARM Loxahatchee National Park: January 3, 2019: 0735

Walking in nature the other day I happened to see these leaves that were shaped like a heart.

Mizner Park: Boca Raton: June30, 2017: 5461

Visiting a museum, I spotted this piece of art of the wall that was the shape of a heart.

Seattle, Orca Islands, Leavensworth, March 04-13, 2016 6085

In Seattle, two years ago, we visited the gum wall and clearly someone shared their love in the shape of a gum heart.

12615165_10153893794302603_2079328652012804373_o

Books are my heart.  I love to read and so one day, I played around with creating a heart in the book I was reading.  If you want to know, the book was “The Girl in the Spiders Web” 🙂

A.R.M Loxahatchee National Park: January 20, 2017:

I was out at the wetlands watching the sunset and was able to witness, for the first time ever in my life, the dance of the boat tailed grackle, namely murmuration.  I happily snapped a whole lot of images, and was pleasantly surprised when I looked at this one and it looked like a heart.

Red hearts: Jan 26, 2016: 3887

February is the month of hearts and this particular image was of a February Centerpiece.

You can learn more about CHD by clicking on this link or  here.  The first link will take you to CHD.org and the second link will take you to the Children’s Heart Foundation.  You too can be a part of sharing awareness.  Tag #paperheartproject, #chdawareness, #sharesix_red/heart.

And on that note, red hearts are traditionally found around Valentine’s Day which is just around the corner, so I would like to take the time wish you all a Happy Valentines Day.  Richard is my Valentine and he photo bombed my shoot when I was taking my first image.  We have been married 32 years and I have to be honest, I cannot think of a better person to have at my side.  Have a wonderful valentines day.  Don’t forget to tell someone you love them 🙂

Tell me a Story: January 2019

It January and my story this month is about the new additions to our family.  Not mine, but Amy’s and Daniel’s.  So I guess that makes them grandkits.

At the end of November a friend sent a text to Amy and me asking with we wanted the little black and white cat.  She had found it crying in the parking lot.  The next day she texted again and she had found the rest of the litter, but no mom.  Of course, Amy had to have it and so Snow and Rory joined the family.

Amy had not moved into her apartment yet, Daniel had not arrived yet and she had to go to Philadelphia on business.  So guess who came to stay with me.  Much to my two’s disgust the kittens moved in.  They are pure delight, innocence and mischievousness all rolled into these two bundles of fur.

My tabby Simba, growled and hissed at them.  The gray and white cat, Mirrabelle, that came to stay temporary, and which never left, is not much older than a year was not quite sure what to do with them.   The first three pics are from the first visit, the rest are from the end of the year visit.  Oh and Snow is now Jon Snow as Amy discovered Snow was a he and not a she 🙂

These two siblings sleep like the ying and yang.

img_0227[32511]

I was with them in my office one evening only to discover that they had both found my brief case and taken their turns to pose in it.

The both spent the evening exploring my office.

One of the days I took them outside to do a photoshoot with them.

The second visit they were a little braver.  Simba still hissed and growled and walked away disgusted.  Mirrabelle spent time attempting to corner them or play with them.  They quickly discovered that if they ran up the stairs they could peer over the railing and be safe.  They also liked to explore outside on the deck.  The one day they found a gap between the ferns and lay down and went to sleep.

Snow – me too.

These two are a real delight.  I don’t see them often enough but love it when I do.  Snow is kind of an attack cat.  He waits for Rory to be either below him or doing something else and then next thing he pounces.  Rory on the other hand takes a little while to figure things out but once he does he is a delight to watch.  I am so glad to have these guys as part of our lives.

30 Minutes in the Life: January 2019

Over the winter months West Palm Beach has a green market at the bottom end of Clematis Street.  Two week ago I was supposed to go up and join Amy and Daniel at the market but things came up and I did not get up there.  Last week I drove up to West Palm Beach and we headed down to enjoy the sights and sounds.

First off there was a flea market leading up to to the green market that we meandered through.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1143

The streets were lined with vendors and I love all the interesting things I find at a flea market.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1145

Beautiful handmade baskets.  I loved the one with the candle inside it.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1146

So I now know what to do with all of Richard’s golf clubs. Make a dog.  I thought this was pretty cool.  The bicycle at the very end of the table was made with a bicycle chain.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1147

Jewelry and stuff toys made for an interesting table.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1150

Reloved – not quite sure what that means but I am assuming that it is existing clothes with a new take on them.  I did love the banner though.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1151

I did not get up close enough to decide whether these were pens or decorative hair pieces but I really loved the vibrant colors

At this point we had reached the green market and I was looking forward to finding the spice stand.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1153

I always love to see orchids.  They remind me of my dad.  These Vanda orchids were outstanding and I while I wanted to get some there was so much to still see that I found myself moving on to the next stand.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1155

What a wonderful burst of color these cacti created.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1156

And then I spent some time here at this particular stand looking at all the different spices.  Mmm the smells were awesome and I walked away with with a red curry, lamb rub spices, Marsala, and another version of curry.  I had got what I had come for.  A few stands on I found another Indian store where I bought some beef samoosa’s for Richard.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1158

These cute little air plants could definitely find a place in my home.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1160

I just gave Amy three round glass balls after her wedding with the idea that she could make some small terrariums.  These were the perfect examples for me.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1161

And then I found the lady selling tea.  Tea has a special place in my home.  My grandmothers, mother and aunts drank tea.  I drink tea.  But one of the best memories is always triggered by the smell of vanilla tea.  My friend Gavin, who is no longer with us, always used to invite me into the kitchen when I visited for a cup of vanilla tea that he had brought back from the Maldives.  He always said the others did not appreciate the Vanilla tea.  Of course I left with a packet of vanilla tea.  Just opening it up and smelling it makes me feel good.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1163

The fruit and veggies looked delicious.  Poor Daniel became the one to carry all the purchases.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1165

Another spice dealer.  A little more expensive but I loved that you could see what had gone into make up the spice.  Daniel decided to smell one of the spices and spent the next 10 minutes sneezing.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1167

Chilli’s – the colors were so vibrant and enticing.

And then we were heading back up to the flea market. My 30 minutes is up but I am going to share the rest of our outing.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1173

Hand made butterflies that were so delicate and beautiful.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1174

Colorful beads each design worked into the clay before the bead is even rolled.  Of course, I loved the black and white beads.  Amy says I need more color in my life.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1176

I loved these big flowers made out of recycled soda bottles and spray painted.  Amy decided that her and Daniel would have a project soon to make their own.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1177

And just because.  I thought of my cousins daughter daughter who has just had a sweet little girl.  I could see her in this outfit.

As I expected Amy was hungry and we needed to go for something to eat.  Actually I was hungry as well – I skipped breakfast to get up there as early as I could, so we spent some time eating before heading back to the car.  On the way I could some of the beautiful graffiti that you can find in WPB if you go looking.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018:

Some of my favorite artwork is on the walls in Clematis Street.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1171

I had to crop this one as someone in their wisdom put a gas heater in front of the bottom of the artwork.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1180

I loved this colorful encouragement of friendship.

WPB Green/Flea Market: January 19, 2018: 1183

Cartoon characters and more.  I love how the artists minds work.

Going to West Palm Beach is always fun for me, especially heading down to Clematis Street and the art district.  If you are in the area stop by and enjoy what the city has for you.  Clematis Street has lots of little restaurants, pubs and places to hang out along with some awesome graffiti if you are happy to go looking.

Share Six: January 2019: Wide

So the New Year has begun and it is countdown until the end of the year. Let me start out by saying Happy New Year. May 2019 be a blessing to you. May your home be filled with love, joy, peace, family and good health.

I am so excited to begin another year with the Share Six team. These ladies are amazing and they push us out of our comfort zone each and every month. This month I chose the theme {Wide}. This is somewhat hard for me – I am very attached to my zoom lens.

A visit to Bok Gardens in December required me to photograph wide. The gardens were gorgeous and the trees were outstanding. I loved all the moss on the branches and the Spanish moss hanging from the trees.

News Years Day has seemed to become a tradition for me to get up early in the morning and head to the ocean to watch a new year begin. The opportunity to start again, to write a new story of 365 days. I am conscious that I am getting older and time is getting shorter. I want to enjoy every moment of each day and what it has to offer. I am hoping that this year brings more travel, new faces, new friends, and the meeting of new family. I hope that your 2019 is a year filled with many joys.

Last but not least I took myself off to the local Wetlands to watch the sunset. I did a short walk around the board walk and then headed up to the waters edge to wait for the setting sun. There was a bank of clouds but the sky did light up as the sun set.

Tell me a Story: December 2018

December was a busy month, starting out with the wedding. There was a lot that went into it, and a lot of last minute changes. Suffice to say we survived the wedding. It was beautiful and we were thankful to watch the faces of Amy and Daniel as they shared their commitment to each other.

The other highlight was the fact that my brother was coming into town for a conference and was planning to spend the weekend with us. He arrived the day before the wedding. It was so nice to have family in town, especially when there is only 5, now 6 of us.

I had decided that I would drive him up to Orlando after the wedding for his conference. Richard decided that he would go with and we would travel via the middle of Florida stopping off at a place called Bok Gardens. I have wanted to visit this place for a while now and we know that my brother loves walking through different gardens.

Bok Gardens were stunning. The owner many years ago wanted to retreat to nature and built these beautiful gardens. He also built on the property what is know as Bok Towers. This is called the singing tower. On the hour music plays. Amy has visited the Towers and actually gone up and she says there is a organ up in the tower and if I remember correctly a recreation room with a library. On this particular day they had musical recitals at certain hours that played Christmas Carols.

So here are some of the images I captured while walking through the gardens.

There was so much more to Bok Gardens, and quite honestly I would visit again in a heartbeat, and not had a time frame to leave. If you are in the Lake Wales, Florida area, stop by and visit these beautiful gardens, they are so worth it.

30 Minutes in the life: December 2018

Oh and so the year draws to a close. This month we chose to do a festive five. We are all busy and tired and ready to take it easy. I know for one I am. The last 4 months have been hectic, and the first weekend in December we had the privilege of hosting, decorating, planning, taking photographs, and watching our baby girl marry the man of her dreams. Suffice to say I was ready for the Christmas / New Year break. Already half of it is over and I feel like I have really done so little. However, that said the break has been great and I am hoping that the next 7 days will have me refreshed and ready to kick back into a busy schedule at work.

I thought about sharing Christmas photo’s but honestly I did not take to many, and besides I have been editing wedding photo’s for the last 3 weeks. However, my brother flew in for a conference the day before the wedding and I was so grateful that he was there. When you have no family in the country you are living in, it is always a blessing to have them fly in. After the wedding we drove him up to Orlanda, via the middle of Florida, and stopping at a place I have wanted to visit for at least a year – Bok Gardens in Lake Wales.

My festive five come from their beautiful Christmas gardens.

This was a great way to get ready for the Christmas season. The beauty of the gardens and the stunning Christmas decorations kept us there longer than we had planned, but it was so worth the visit.

This leaves me with one wish, that you may all have a blessed and wonderful 2019. I wish you love, peace, joy, good health and blessed time with your families.

Thank you for sticking with us for another year of 30 Minutes. Just a reminder that this is a circle blog, so take some time to visit my friend Stacey of Stacey Markel Photography, and see what she has for you this year.
